Probably not so lucky since that publisher got $2 while Google got $16 for the $18 click. :D

There is some place in Adwords where you get warned like "That is a significant change, are you sure you want to make that change?" I believe I saw it on the old interface when lowering a budget.

Google could easily mistake proof the system and it would eliminate the appearance of evil it has by leaving that fat finger trap out there.

If they have an advertising budget of a million dollars they are going to spend it. But certainly they must have dept heads studying the results of all ads including google ad words... i too find it hard to believe that paying several
dollars for one click is productive....

Big companies have big advertising budgets so for them spending any amount is reasonable just to promote the brand. For us smaller businesses, paying several dollars per click is unreasonable as it will only lead us to losing money which we cannot afford to do.

I doubt you'll get your money back. Even big name gurus like Jonathan Volk have made this same mistake. It all comes down to Google but I would just take it as a hard lesson learned and move on.

Damn! I feel really sorry for you and I hope you can get your money back. However, I feel what's done is done :( and all you can do is try contacting Google.

I would argue that clicks have as much value as the receiver of the click gives them. Example: an advertiser might be willing to pay $50 per click targeting certain keywords that would likely result in sales of a several thousand dollar niche software package... say for a dentist or doctor's office. However, spending $50 per click for a website advertising a service you only charge $50 to $75 an hour for - massage, plumbing, programming services, etc. isn't very likely.

You'll notice that lawyers tend to charge quite a bit for their services, but if they're able to get a good amount of business through targeted adwords advertising, $10 to $20 per click might not be such a bad deal. Chances are that clients looking for a lawyer are usually in some kind of a situation where they need someone now and they'll probably call the first one they find that looks halfway decent.

WOW! Sorry to hear that but I doubt there is anything you can do about that. Except being careful in future :)

Sorry for not giving an update about this thread but yes I contacted them and they credited half the amount back to my account and yes I know it was a mistake I don't need people telling me I'm dumb and didn't know what I was doing of course I know that I messed up but what's done is done. And whodi to bad I didn't fatten up anything for the publishers it was all on the search network so more than likely it was google who got the money and not you!

Good to hear that Google is reasonable. We all thought they would not do anything about it but they did refund some of your money which is nice. Now, watch your campaigns regularly and try to optimize them as much as possible because if you don't, you'll get plenty of clicks but no buyers.

Sorry to hear that, but I'm afraid there is no remedy for your mistake. You'd better look out the next time.
Maybe you can take this incident as a precious opportunity to remind of yourself in the future.

I passed the situation on to my Google Account rep and she passed it on to the product specialist. He replied that there are warnings when changing/deleting a budget, ad or keyword. I then reiterated that it is the bid that is the one that is not mistake proof and needs a warning. I trust they will get it right sooner or later.
