I have recently installed XAMPP with Apache/MySQL/PHP/FileZilla and PERL services - meaning now i can put websites (made up of php files ) onto my Apache web server which is installed on my home pc. But i want to access those web sites from any computer just like viewing a normal web site. Can i do that? Or how can i do that? Do i need to host it?
Did you try... htetep://[youriphere] If you're running Apache it should come up. Be sure to allow access through Windows Firewall for Apache/MySQL. Sorry I had to write it like that, but apparently I can't post links yet.
Firstly thanks for reply. But that wasn't i really looking for. I want anyone to just type in a domain name (mywebsite.com) and will access my web page which is stored in my local computer machine having apache web server running storing the website. I heard something about static/dynamic IP addresses and you need to consult ISP to give you static ips ... is that right?
Yes, if you already have a static IP then you can buy a domain name and change the nameservers to your computer IP. If you don't have a static IP then try dyndns.com (dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/) Of course.. you know.. a $5/mo hosting account will take care of all this
A few issues: - i have no clue on how i can get a static ip from my ISP - i do not know what is "nameservers" - what does dyndns.com do? Well i thought of having a web hosting account.. So what is the difference between a web hosting account and using apache thing... surely both ways will get you the same end product doesn't it? Then does that mean the static ip way is free whereas using a web hosting account cost money?
You're better off just buying a hosting account. When you buy a domain name you will need to update the DNS information to point to wherever you are hosting your site. For instance.. If you buy hosting from 1and1.com and you buy a domain name from GoDaddy then you will have to update your nameservers for your domain to point to something like ns.1and1.com so when people visit your domain they are forwarded to 1and1.com nameservers which then point to the server that is hosting your site.
Right OK I suppose i will go down that route.. But yet i still dont get the idea of nameservers and what is pointing to the server that is hosting site. I mean - how do you actually do it, you see - its very easy said than being done.. Do hosting sites provide those functionalities?
