Accepted file extensions when adding feeds to a reader

Hello and thanks for your time. When adding a feed to a feed reader, do they have to be either .xml, or .rss extensions? I have a script that builds an rss feed on the fly and it displays in the browser. I cannot copy and paste the url to a reader however because the url ends with the script page and an extension of .cfm (coldfusion markup language)

Any info will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have own feeds with OTHER file extensions and they all display correctly in my readers
it appears never the extension to be important but the correct file format.

    validate your feed!!!
    for example at
    http://feedvalidator.org/
when validated - independent of your extension - the file should work in all readers and RSS directories
