I need to create a website with a small amount of content management for a friend/client (a friend who is paying me in other words lol) Would it be acceptable to use wordpress as my CMS system? Would professional web companies do this? Does it matter what CMS you use? Thanks.
I do a few websites (but not necessarily a professional) and for anything that needs a bit of CMS I love joomla!, it rocks. There's a bit of a learning curve but if you can setup/work wordpress you should have no problems. Wordpress is great too but it can be a pain to set up decent navigation if you have lots of pages.
All he wants is a 2 page website, and to be able to update his home page with current information. So basically a 2 page custom themed blog lol.
I have spent the last 2 days learning how to cusom theme a wordpress but do you think it is worth taking the time to experiment with Joomla before building my site?
Its better to go with Wordpress! because for low budget websites you can choose it.. If you looking to create a custom based template then you can hire any designer to design a theme upto your choices! I think it will be better choice for you to do it!
HI Jezzz thanks for the advice I do intend to customize and design the whole site myself. I was just curious as to what is more "industry standard" if you will. I know a lot of professionals use expression engine. But as a beginner I am looking to just use the CMS that'd be the most reputable as I don't want to look like a complete amateur. Or does it even matter? And do they all do pretty much the same thing. If I can get what I want out of wordpress is there any issues with me using it... Thanks. I'd like to just use wordpress as I have spent hour and hours learning how to code templates for it and experimenting with how it works.
According to what you said, WP might be the best choice IMHO. There are also many tuts for customizing a theme. Joomla is too heavy for this, you don't wanna crush a fly on the wheel, do you?
The site is for a DJ and event he is putting on. He wants to update the home page on an almost daily basis. I only actually need CMS at the most basic level really. I dont intend to build a big blog or even make it look like a blog. I am just using the wordpress to get the posts content and title. Just out of curiosity how much would you charge someone for a site like this?
i use wordpress as a cms on a few sites, its just so much more manageable then other cms' its easy to theme, its light on the server and its easy to teach someone how to use the admin panels
I agree it is quite easy to use and customize etc, my only concern is I dont want to look like a complete amatuer. Like someone designing their pages with MS Paint rather than photoshop, haha. Can anyone answer me how much you'd charge for a site like the one I will be producing?
If you will use just two page better just design it by yourself or if you're not good at it use wordpress, it is very easy to use. There are also lots of free theme there that might fits your needs.
depends if they can find a theme that does what they want a lot of themes have widgets etc but not all incorporate other functions i have noticed i get a bit of work where someone has a free theme but wants to add certain functions that the theme didn't have
Yes, definitely go down the wordpress route, you can customise a template and give him access to post his own stuff, should work great. Joomla is overkill for this project.
wordpress is a great tool. It is a solid option for customers and is easy for you to host and manager.
I would suggest you use WordPress for your project, do not worry too much about what professional web companies would do, WordPress is a brilliant piece of software that can be moulded to do almost anything you can imagine. There are tons of themes (especially premium ones) that you can use and redesign for your client, take a look at woothemes.com showcase and get some ideas, in fact there are some famous sites using WordPress. (i tried to link those sites for you but appearantly im still newbie so not allowed to post links ) Joomla is good but not really appropriate for what you want to achieve (2 page site).
I used wordpress and stripped it right down to just the posts function. Guy can update his home page and is happy. Thanks for the advice guys.
