Acceptable server load

I have a load of about 5 on my server at almost all times. It's a single processor server. Should I upgrade? My site seems to load quite ok.

A single core processor should have load lower than 1, as that would indicate 100% usage. If your sites are loading fine, perhaps there is something else running that is driving the load up.

An average of 5 for a single processor server is way too high. An average below 1 is recommended.

    It's definitely time to upgrade.

Bear in mind that the site may be loading OK when you check it, but may not be working as well during peak periods. Users may also be being interrupted during their site browsing experience, which may begin to start to affect conversions, etc.

That's not an acceptable load average.

Certainly, it's time to upgrade if there is no malicious/suspicious processes are eating CPU.
