I've had a couple of submissions from sites that are similar to directories in that they classify and group information that is available elsewhere, but put it together to make it easier to find. In this case, they are taking videos from uTube and other sources and putting them together to create a tutorial/directory site. From what I could read on the uTube site, creating a site like that might be against their TOS. Trouble is my email to uTube/Google only yielded the typical idiotic and uninformative reply. Generally, I think the site involved is a cool idea but worry about the repercussions of linking to such a site if it is indeed against the TOS of uTube. At some level I say if uTube/Google is unconcerned, why should I be? But, I think as the society that is the Internet; once you start ignoring the policies of other sites, it's a slippery slope downhill. So, long story short - would you accept such a site or decline it?
Youtube allows you to use their videos but I guess it becomes a problem if someone builds a whole entire site out of them. If their content is good enough, link to it.
The more I think about this, the more I wonder if it is also a copyright issue. The site invites people to submit videos they've found even if they are from a commercial site as long as the video is more tutorial than it is an ad. Seems like if a screenshot is copyrightable a video certainly would be and as a writer, copyright is something I try very hard to honor.
I don't think it's a copyright issue if you're talking about embedded videos, because they are hosted by YouTube and still contain the branding. After all, they must know how to block such things by referrer, and it does go on a lot. Personally I rarely if ever link to such websites, because they're not the source of the content. And I don't link to YouTube because it's awash with copyright infringement issues of its own.
I saw late yesterday a conversation over in the Adsense section about these sites. Someone posted a bit of a Google TOS (can't remember if YouTube or Adsense). It has been rewritten from when I looked at it and it makes it quite clear that compiling YouTube videos topically on another site for the purpose of making money with Adsense is definitely a no-no.
