Abusing meta tags?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Mr.tyro, Oct 23, 2007.

I have read allot about soe and i am applying ever trick in the book and meta seems to be one of them, even though they are seen as over rated now i want to still use them. The question i wanted to ask when does it become when you are abusing meta tags? Are there any outlines? A certain number of allowed keywords? Certain number of allowed phrases?

    Thanks in future

It's best to stick to the rule only allowing one instance of your keyword in each meta tag that you use, and the only two that are worth considering are keywords and description.

I meen a meta tag on the top of the page where you put in your keywords in. You use them at the top of each page for a better search engine ranking. Use meta tags keyword description on every page.

Always include your important keywords in title tag and meta tag but dont do keyword spamming. I think 60 characters in title tag and 200 characters in description tag is enough. you can include 15 - 20 key phrases in keyword tag.

Make sure your description and title are different for every page of your site.

Make the description human readable and enticing, it can help your click through rate in the SERPs if you have an enticing meta description.

    Hope this helps

SOrry my post was a little ambiguous.

Make sure they are all actually different. For example, dont put something like "Training For the Elite - Raw Grip" as your title on every page... Instead create different titles for every page and just end it with "RawGrip"

    Hope this helps

    Title tag = 63 characters

Meta Keyword tag = 256 characters

Meta Description tag = 156 characters

All values are including spaces, and make sure beyond this limit the stuff will get cropped..

Do you need commas between your keyword tags?

    Yes you do.

    Don't type similar words like
    - DNA
    - dna
    - Dna
    -D.N.A.

It doesn't matter if there are capitols or dots, or not. Hope this helps!

When using meta tags it is important not to repeat the keywords or keyword phrases and be careful not to over capitalize. The Description tag is like your sites first impression. So take some time and make sure you give your site a good first impression. I hope this helps in your SEO Work.

Also don't spend more than 5 minutes on your keywords or meta description since the keywords meta tag is practically useless these days due to abuse in the past. Don't get me wrong, some search engines still use them, but they're not as important as they used to be years ago.

Now the description on the other hand, well the best way to use this is to write a brief description of what the Web page (note I sad PAGE, not site) is about so your visitors can decide whether they really want to click that link or not. This is your first impression to these often fickle people, so you need to make it count.

I must agree with Dan here, met keywords are less important and should not be the emphasis of your website seo.

I would like to add that your title is also important as this is shown in most search engines including google.

Example search google with the keyword "title"
Title - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - this is the title tag
A title is a prefix or suffix added to a person's name to signify either veneration, an official position or a ... this is the description tag

These are equally important for seo.

I think density has been disregarded now by SERP. As long as the content has not many repeating keywords.

Last I checked, density still plays a major role on how keywords are weighted.

As for SJappie's question, I think that was just a typo (probably meant "lower").
