about to register with godaddy, should I take discounted price or private who is?

I'm about to register some domains, if I reg 5 I get free private whois. The only thing is that they register at the regular price. So it totals 50$

But, there's always a 6.95 discount code, this one is OYH3, which puts the cost at 35.75$ if I don't get the private whois

Is the extra 15 bucks worth it for private whois for a year?

hmm. I think I decided to go with a lot of sites at the discount price and then later as private whois onto the sites I decide to use primarily slash the ones that "make it"

We do not have any restrictions like 5 domains or 10 domains for privacy protection.
Even if you register a single domain we provide privacy protection free.
    Our prices are freezed.

I actually thing I'm going with name.com instead of godaddy just because of 5.99 + free private whois. It's been a tough call with everyone and their brother talking about how good godaddy is. And of course, with a site this big, there's bound to be some user problems, but that's not entirely what did it for me. (although I have heard a lot of troublesome stories when it comes time to try and LEAVE godaddy) It was really just the clean simple interface of name.com.

Although, I'm going to put at least one name I plan to just hold on godaddy so that I can compare them.

If free private whois is a big deal to you, then I'd get that. However, Whois provides a great means for end users to contact you to buy your domains, so it's up to you if you really need the privacy.

well crap. Lol. I was really close until I read this.

My main qualm is that the whois will have my home phone, addy, and personal name on it until I get enough money to operate everything (including another phone) under my business name. How much flexibility do I have to edit the placeholder pages, say with a contact email and fax.

Also what about the "spam" I hear people get from having their info available. Isn't there another way to contact the owner, like through the registrar or something?

How about setting it up with a special e-mail account (not you main one) and not using your real phone number. You can always edit your contact info later.

yeah, I'm going to set it up with a forwarded account. i'm at gmail and I use willpower102 to screen a large portion of my mail with forwarding and filtering :)

the fake phone kinda defeats the purpose of having your contact info there doesn't it? Well, i guess they can still get to you via email. Definitely a good idea. I'll probably go in and change all that.

btw, I ended up going half and half. The sites that I know I'm going to permanently keep like myname.com and willpower101.com are with names.com and the ones I'm just holding until I decide what to do with them are at godaddy.

I purchased another domain at name.com and used a fake phone and a (forwarded) email address. I got an page saying I was being sent to the fraud investigations department to make sure the transaction was legit. Is it legal to use fake identifying information?

I was reading somewhere(on DP?) that you can report people for fake info. Pay for privacy or risk getting reported?

To answer your question, yes it's legal.....a violation of their TOS more than likely. More than likely they are more concerned about protecting your credit card or other method of payment. They might find it hard to believe that 10 people are using the same card.

How about setting the domains up in your name and pushing them to "a friend"?

Ahh. Interesting Idea. I know tips like these may seem basic or trivial but I'm so very new to this game and I really appreciate it!
