If you use 301 redirect you will retain PR and backlinks eventually.

Right, you would get some juices lost even if you use a 301 redirection if only you have a lot deep linked inner pages backlinks on your old domain. :)

    Have a nice day,

On a different forum, someone asked the same question recently and there was a quote from Matt Cutts saying that some link juice will be lost in 301 redirects. It didn't specify how much link juice but the impression was maybe not too much but still some.

It's a pity to lose some backlinks through moving domain. Would you consider keeping both domains, and use the older one to provide links to newer ones?

You will lose your PR initially but the 301 redirect is basically telling google that this is a permanent change so hopefully your backlinks should all eventually get re-indexed and transfer your link juice to the new one.

Even you use 301 redirect, you still need time before the bots can recognize the change you made. I have experienced with this kind of change and found I had to waited for 4-6 weeks before ranking setteled. Each site has different waiting time depends on its link popularity and update history.
