    The key is to get backlinks from a variety of pages, there is no benefit from getting more than one backlink from a same website

    NO, this is not beneficial and Google will be count only 1 backlink....so this is not benificial Google's point of view..

    One or two links on a single page is alright if you use different keyword for each of them... but more than that, would surely look spammy... in my opinion. Do not ever over do anything... is my humble advice! :)
