It depends on the directory. The Yahoo directory, for example, is a terrific example of a paid directory that it is good to submit to. They are very selective about who they let in their directory, and have gained quite a bit of respect from Google becuase of it. Most paid directories, however, will let anyone that pays into it. directories that allow low grade sites into them are heavily discounted by Google.

If you are talking about a paid submission service, that will auto-submit you to 100's or evern 1000's of directories for one price, I strongly suggest you stay away from these. If google see's that you have used a submission service to submit to 100's or 1000's of low grade directories, you can be penalized, or even banned from Google altogether.

May I know why he should not submit to paid directories?

I would like to hear some valid reasons in this regard...;)

Else, I'd think that 1) No, Please do not submit in paid directory actually means No, Please do not submit in paid directory because I just got one more post count!

    2) Because the link in your sig leads to this

If you're going for paid directories, look into Yahoo & BOTW.org for sure. Also Business.com if your site fits in a category there.

There's a good reason most free directories are free. Think about it.

That's just silly. I'm not a huge fan of directories in general, but you're not going to get the same benefit form a free directory as you do from yahoo's paid directory. The only possible exception might be the DMOZ directory, and that one will take 6 months or longer to get accepted to.

LOL. That's sorta like not taking Aspirin because you have a free bowl of M&Ms handy.

    The free directories...
    • might help,
    • might do nothing,
    • and in some cases might even exacerbate the situation.
It's known that some directories have been judged more authoritative by Google and were thereby spared the wrath big G slapped on a lotta directories. It is also widely suspected there's a potential downside of being associated with others that fall into the "bad neighborhood" category. One thing you're paying for with the big guys is "track record".

I dunno... if a headache gets to bothering you while you're out hiking, you have two choices (three if you count "just accepting the headache")...
    1. You can make the effort to travel to a doctor or
    2. You can chew random roots and berries hoping they'll cure what ails you (and won't kill you).
The second option does have the advantage of being cheaper. :)

Stay away from paid directories unless, you see a bunch of high ranking competitive sites there.
