I am a "newb" to SEO or working with search engines. I thought my site did not get into google and one day when I checked I was there on the third page for the myspace generators keyword. I just downloaded the google toolbar and see that I don't have any pagerank. My question is how can I increase this and what will it get me? Sorry if this is a newbish question. Thanks, John
Quality, relevant inbound links to your site. Visit the Directories form on DP to add your site to directories, if suited for that. Also read this straight from the horse's mouth: "PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query."
unless you plan to sell your site, or sell links on it pagerank isnt very important. It won't increase your traffic from search engines although if you do have a good pagerank that means you have good incomming links and those links will increase your non search engine traffic.
First you need to understand that PageRanks has nothing to do with your SERP. its just a fun thing indeed, some engineers at google got bored one day and they decided to drive half of the Webmaster's communitiy insane, so they came up with a thing called pagerank. You'd be more worried about gaining in the SERP rather than PageRank IMHO. * Get more and more relevent Quality inbound links.(This will raise your pagerank too) *Work with your page title to suite the most suitable keywords for your site. * Make unique content for your site, and craft your keywords in the content. do not stuff pages with keywords (20 times/keyword/page is enough..) * get more and more pages indexed by google, for this get more inbound links for your inner pages too, make an XML sitemap and submit it to google. * See that your pages are Users friendly as well as Search engine robots friendly (easily readable text, text visible to bots, I'd recommend to use any spider viewer to see how a spider sees your page) * Analyze what is your targeted region and what region you are getting traffic from. optimize your pages to suite that region. * Make sure that your site is stable(constant speed, less errors.. and no broken links) Do all this and it would help you to get better ranking in SEs.. Good Luck..
Take this advice to heart! I would personally forget you ever found out about page rank because it can hurt you if you are just starting out in SEO.
untill last update, PR would have reflected the no. of backlinks your site had got. but with the last update, its only a joke, nothing to do with SERP anymore....
