    You cant really optimise a directory because if it's a general directory for example then you cant get it to rank for the various categories.

    First create a directory and then only someone can suggest you better tips about optimizing (if you will be on wrong track) your directory.

    Directories are pretty much useless for SEO purposes. Why would you want to waste your time making one for this reason? (By the way, if you are dead set on doing this, go with phpLD.)
