    Hi people.
    I have 2 questions.
first, what is exactly the difference between virtualy dedicated and just dedicated servers?

and second, where can I find virtualy dedicated or dedicated at a resonable price, considering the fact I want the provider to be real reliable.

One dedicated server can run several virtual dedicated servers (vps) using virtualization software. With vps you have access to a percentage of the server resources which shared with other vps on the same machine. Thats why vps usually cost less than a dedicated server. Vps act like a real computer where you can install and run your own operating system.

I never use virtual dedicated before, since I always go for dedicated servers, so no idea where you can get a reliable vps provider :) Go to Webhostingtalk.com to find offers for your vps need.

A Dedicated Server as the name described is a whole full computer to yourself. You do not share the server with anyone else but yourself and who you want to share with. You have full access to shell and command line mode and can install anything you want to it.

A Virtual Dedicated Server is not a true dedicated server. It most like is just one big hosting account but you share the computer with many other customers. What the others do can affect you, like a script on their site can affect the performance you are getting.

Yeah you can do what you like

Think of it as 1 computer running windows with server user accounts on. each person can do what they want but it all runs from one thing

    Thanks

Check with the web host. Some offering virtual dedicated server but it is just a huge virtual hosting account without shell account.

From what I understand, Virtual Private Server (VPS) is what you are looking for if you do not need a full server but shell access.

unless you really have a site that needs a lot of cpu/ram/bandwidth don't go for dedicated before you try virtual dedicated. It will save you a lot of money and you can always upgrade to dedicated when your site(s) grow. I have been using PowerVPS for many months and I'm very satisfied with them

I want a server so I can host many websites and to install red5, a flash streaming server, so I guess I need something with high bandwidth processor and ram.

    how are godaddy.com vps?

If you are going to stream you'd better take a full computer(dedicated) and not a virtualized environment(vps)

    Hi!
Godaddy is horrible for vps's..I've heard several horror stories. I've also seen their allocations..which starve the kernel for RAM..which means you really won't be able to do much with it.

I'll be honest..only with experience can you tell what you really need for the task at hand. Many vps providers have trials..or may provide you with one just to see how things go.

I would look for a money-back guarantee as well..and by all means..share with the host exactly what you are planning to do with the vps..this way..there will be no qualms if it doesn't work out and you ask for a refund.

Some things work fine on decent vps's..some really need dedicated servers.

The only way to find out is to try it.
