Is it still okay to post comments on a blog that is not relevant or in the same niche as the site you want to put in the website/URL box? Considering that it's a one way link and not reciprocal, plus you'd be posting a real comment regarding whatever the topic may be, will it be harmful to do that? Or should you only absolutely have to comment on niche blogs relevant to your site? Thanks for any help on this matter.
You can comment on blog but it does not help as much if topic is not related and pr of that page makes difference also.
There is no harm. A backlink is still a backlink even if there is more weight to it if the site is in a similar niche as yours.
PR of the page of course is better, but niche absolutely does not matter. Trust me, I comment on blogs incessantly - it really works, type of blog doesn't matter, and it still builds some pretty good backlinks to this day...
I also used to do comments on every kinds of blogs, i don't mind whether it's in under which niche. I got benefited and still, so why should i not post on the blog. Go ahead, there may be slight possibility to get benefit but it;s never harmful for your website.
relevancy is important and pr is important... a backlink is always a backlink and shouldn't affect your site negatively...
I get some traffic from nofollow (What is nofollow?) comments on blogs... hopefully because I write something interesting. Also, comments on nofollow blogs may add up, if the site has the Top Commenters plugin... because you can get sitewide links that way. Don't make nofollow commenting part of your link building campaign... it's okay to get a nofollow link and maybe some traffic, but don't expect SERP results.
so nofollow blogs won't help in increasing serps though the link may be monitered under the backlinks page of yahoo as an example
I only comment on posts that I like -- whether they are follow/no follow isn't even a consideration for me. Rhonda
Just make sure you post relevant content. I posted crap (not spam but still crap) and got marked as spam by askmit one too many times
Exactly! Posting a good, thoughtful, interesting comment can often get you traffic and subscribers. Posting short, spammy, comments with links will almost assuredly get your comment listed as spam and not get you any traffic. Which is most important? Traffic. The blog comments aren't worth that much in terms of a backlink. The ultimate goal is more traffic.
well said! its sad to see how our competitors build their links by commenting in blogs and there comments are useless and unrelated and putting their website on the comment itself is so unfair
Thank you all for your input. They really help. It's just that I like to read all types of blogs and comment on them because I have something to say. I just don't want the blog owner to think I'm plugging my site, especially if it's a site that's not in the same category as the blog or post.
I have a question, Lets say if i comment on a PR4 (homepage) blog, but the acutual article is PR 0, does that count as a outbound PR4 link, or PR0
if its within your niche... commenting on nofollow blogs can bring you good traffic... obviously dofollow will help you with page rank...
From what I understand, PR only counts for the page your backlink is on. Are there any exceptions though?
No. That's why you need a way to find high Page PR site (and not high domain PR site) with dofollow tag to leave your comments. And you must make sure the site where you leave comment is relevant to your site. Otherwise you are just wasting your time. You can use this free find dofollow software from my site to generate result like this:
