About anchor text in links

I have a doubt about anchor text and for the time I a have been a webmaster, no one could answer it.

Let's suppose I want to achieve high rankings using the phrase "business leaders", so I must create a link building campaign:

My question is:
Does the anchor text should have exactly the keyword?
Example:
business leaders
or
Could be inside of a larger key phrase like:
business leaders of history
or
Leaders and business of time

Does any one knows?

if you are going for "business leader" then definitely the right one is business leaders
No doubts about that. I've done lots of experiments based on that issue.
But logically it couldn't be otherwise - everybody would use paragraphs for anchor text then.

well that depends on the keyword your are targeting and the competition.

in your case business leaders: If the keywords has less competition with some good links you will achieve high rankings for the keyword.

2. Business leaders of history <--- again, still assuming that the main keyword has little competition and business leaders of history has even less competition. Than your site can potentially rank for:

1. business history 2. business leaders 3. history leaders. 4. history of leaders etc.....

It all depends on: 1. competition for your keyword.
2. The way your article is structured.

Hope that helped.

IMHO Both ways are right its better to mix it up some to appear more natural like your links are placed by legitmate webmasters who liked your sites.

Ive always been taught that if you make every one of your back links with the same title it appears to be less natural like if you mix it up a bit and do some one short tail and some long tail, it looks more natural to the searches.

But to each his own..

"Business Leaders" will give the best result.... but you could also vary your keywords like your other two examples.. they will not help as much, but they will...

if you have a large competition, then you need to build a lot of backlinks to get a specific KW ranked high. google is getting smarter and knows by now that its not natural that everyone will link back to your site using the exact same anchor text. to make it look a little more natural, you need to use variation of anchor text. in your case, you can use Business Leaders, Business Leaders of History, and other anchor texts that has the words business leaders in it.
