About anchor text and link building

    I want an advice on link building regarding anchor texts. This may be a very basic question but I am a lil confused over it.

    Suppose I have a site - pets.com with a page optimized for keyword "cats". Now I want to build links so that this page should rank high for the term cats. The anchor text I use will be cats, now the question is this - should the links with this anchor text target only the page ie. pets.com/cats/ for this keyword or the homepage (pets.com) as well.

    Please give me your thoughts on this.

    Firstly, pets.com/cats/ is a directory, not a page (file). If you want to target the page about cats only, then either use the keyword "cats" consistently in all the achor texts or use the keyword "cats" consistently in all the title-attributes of the achor-tag in combination with random/non-related anchor texts. For example:

    "Visit my interesting page about <a href="http://www.pets.com/cats/yourfile.htm">cats</a>."

    "Read more about these furry pets <a href="http://www.pets.com/cats/yourfile.htm" title="cats">here</a>."

    Good example ;
    Addition to this;
    "Visit my interesting page about <a href="http://www.pets.com/cats/yourfile.htm" title="Cats"><b>cats</b></a>."

    or

    "Visit my interesting page about <a href="http://www.pets.com/cats/" title="Cats"><b>cats</b></a>." would be good example..

    Thanks for the reply. Really nice tips on using title tags on random anchors.

    Should I target homepage for the same anchors as well, like
    <a href="http://www.pets.com">cats</a>
    or concentrate on the page itself for that anchor text.

    The addition of the 'furry cats' or related keywords is important too. Like having specific types of cats or cat varieties would also help strengthen the keyword density of the page. People normally search for more than one word say 'persian cats'... IMHO...

    Only Meta description if you want, Meta Keywords are just junk. No good search engine looks at this.
