It's good idea to pick lesser known and high paying niches. These niches are less saturated and are easy to rank on Google.

You can use both Amazon and Adsense in your site.

If your product isn't oversaturated in the market, its best to go with Amazon.

Its best to come up with a product niche, search around, and find one with a penetrable market, then dive in - make the site, add the affiliate links, get some SEO, etc...

If you want to promote physical products - Amazon is the place to go... check out the best sellers in your niche and new product release etc..

Unless you have a lot of traffic adsense will only hurt your earnings. You want a few laser targeted calls to action on your page and ads tend to just confuse visitors and make things look terrible. I've ran a few ads on my affiliate sites and experienced increases in click through on my Amazon links when I removed the ad blocks. One thing you could try though is having ads only displayed on the single post view of your site for posts older than seven days.

You can use both on your sites but if you do your amazon earnings will decline significantly, if not all. You want people to click on your amazon links, I would think, so adsense would just be a distraction.

No problems, as long as you're not using adwords to advertise for traffic, that gets into the tricky zone

likely to cause confusion for visitors, because there are two programs in one site. Adsense and Amazon.
    but it's up to you

From the user point of view, AdSense blocks are clearly ads, whereas Amazon links (text links or pictures) can be a recommended article, hence real content.
If you choose carefully the products you propose, there is no confusion, but a real complementarity.

Targeting is everything. Otherwise you wouldn't have good results. So this is viable, just make sure you target traffic and audience for Amazon but only use AdSense for general traffic.
