Do not do business with companies listed on alibaba. they are not manufacturers but trading companies. The actual manufacturer is in the same town as these people. what the game is is that the trading company dropships the product from the manufacturer. it is difficult to find the actual manufacturer of the product. if you notice many of the companies listed are in the same city. Always negotiate with the owner and not some girl they hired to take orders
yeah but you need to go to that city to find the real business, not the one-man-show. that is the best way - otherwise, you can try to find any reference over Internet, but it's hard
As long as you get the deal you want, what difference does it make? The actual manufactures can sometimes to be difficult to deal with, especially when it comes to import/export issue. We don't use alibaba, but a lot of times we'd rather like to deal with local trading companies, while having them to babysite the actual manufactures.

As long as you got product in competitive price and scam-free, what's the problem with that? That is business and Chinese are not selfish so they are distributing the revenues...nothing wrong for me..
most of that site is trading houses, but 8 out of 10 times I would deal with a trading house if they are making 10-20% than with the manufacturer, as the manufacturers rarely speak english or know anything about what they are producing...
