I've recently moved across the world from the UK to Australia and am hoping to start building some Australian exclusive sites using .com.au domain names. I went to register a couple and then discovered I need an ABN. Having now briefly looked into an ABN, I see they are free to register. I just wanted to know if any aussies out there have one, and what the purpose of one is? Does having an ABN mean I will automatically get hit by tax for buying a domain name and making a few bucks from ads on my sites? As a 19 year old freelance web designer, am I eligible for one? Thanks in advance for any help. Cheers, James Rayers
G'day James, I have an ABN and it's twofold the reason for having one. 1) Liabilty 2) Tax. You will need to visit www.ato.gov.au to have your tax questions answered or ask your local tax accountant. You can run your business without registering for GST for earning up to $50,000 per year. Once you earn over this then this must be done to avoid prosecution. Again, your local tax accountant should be able to let you know full details and best options. Another great source for info is http://www.asic.gov.au Regards and hope this helps. Col
It's even easier if your in Aus. You do it online and they send the details out to you within a few days.
