A few attempts over the past couple of years have been made to get people to reveal their shopping cart abandonment rates. It would really be helpful to know what other people are getting so we know how badly we are all doing. I have heard from my web host provider that industry average is 1-2% success, in other words 98-99% of the shopping carts is abandoned before buying. This is shopping carts, not the ratio between visitors and buyers. Our engineering site has about 34% success rate. So compared with "industry average" we are doing pretty well, but how does that compare with the rest of you experts? best regards wiz
I've seen numbers between 1% and 25%, it really depends on the niche, the ease of check out, and the typical buyers demand for the item. Any site where you have to sign up and fill out a profile before you can even calculate shipping is going to see a higher abandon rate.
From what I'm seeing it's very high, in the 90% range. However, I'm only looking at it from a specific point (registering, which is at the later stage before checkout), not at the first and second step of the shopping cart. I think from unique visitor to buyer is probably about 1-20% though. It depends on where and how I'm getting the traffic.
I have been trying to get "industry standards" for shopping cart abandonment rates since 2007. Finally I got an advertisement from Wordtracker that says that 60% to 70% of carts are abandoned. This fits with our experience. Also, only about 2% of our carts are abandoned at the check-out page, where you might expect to find frustration with credit card approvals, etc. It looks like most people are adding to the cart, checking out the shipping cost, and going away. Do you retailers that offer free shipping improve the abandonment rate? best regards wiz
Hello, Check this post. They have some stats on average abandonment rate and moreover they provide really useful tips on how to reduce abandonment rate.
My abandonment rate is about 40%. That may seem low, but I make it slightly more of a process to give people access to the shopping cart. They give me their email, and I thank them for their order before they make it! This works wonders.
