abandoned pages and search engines

I created a page on one of my sites and uploaded it. A few days later the owner of the site instructed me to change the title of the page and the links accordingly. I got some advice a week or so ago letting me know that if I want to change a page I dont need to do a 301 redirect if google hasn't indexed the page yet. I checked and it wasnt indexed so I just shortened the htm file name to the desired new name and uploaded it. Recenly I was surfing google and found that I left the old page up on the server and that it was indexed (and getting good SE results). What is the best course of action now? Do I erase the indexed page off the server or leave it there along with the new page but not link to it. The old page and new page are almost the same page. The only difference is the (_________ . htm ) and the H1 tag.

This is really embarasing and I would like to figure out a way to fix it.

    Thank You
