Hello, guys! I'd like to know your opinion about such a way. Look: if you build a custom soft (a liitle but useful maybe deskbar or a toolbar), register it in a software catalogues that may bring a new traffic to your site. Also, it may increase your PR, 'cause you'll get a lot of your links on a highly popular sites. how do you find it?
It will increase the PR in the case the links are direct. Some software sites use redirection and in most such cases, the PR is not transferred. If you can, get other links as well. For example, you may give out the copy of your soft to some bloggers for a review.
I have made various extensions / toolbars / scripts to help promote my site. I have had marginal luck. But I think the idea is good - I do think my execution was lacking. >rt

i've listed software in download sites including the biggies - download.com (which includes zdnet.com), tucows.com, and numerous others. my experience is that getting people to download your software is just about as challenging as getting people to visit your website.
Of course, that's not only method to use. You should combine it with other. And how your PR was going? It should increase, because of that links from a catalogues.
but still keep the thread open... may be few people find some ideas from ur site to create some toolbars like you

I think PageRank ad SearchOn aren't the only functions to use, right? I see such an opportunities: - a toolbar for a hosting company, that should help users to manage their account and site; - a toolbar for a forums like this - to managae account to, to make a search or for a quick view of a "Top 10" or smth like this (just think - voting maybe ); - a toolbar for e-store or auction - to be in a close contact or to order a goods, increase your price; - a toolbar for a search engine. No comments Benefits are obvious So, how can it be used? What features would you like to see if you would make a custom toolbar? And what should it has to attract a users?
There are actually too many ways of how to promote your software products and scripts. Use Google to find most of them, hotscripts, dynamicdrive, xxxscripts, yyyscripts, quite a lot of others, download sites like snapfiles.com, eurodownload.com, etc.... also participate in forums for webmasters and/or (potential) users of your software...just to name a few of possibilities. Your chances are quite good, as this kind of stuff is always needed

You are right! I once thought of having some program made and offer it at Download.com. I started browsing around... and boy, it sure is difficult to get your program noticed! There are millions of programs listed, so if you want your to have a special spot, like a top-of-the-page listing or something like that, you need to pay.. and I mean pay a lot $$$
But if making of your own software won't take a thousands of $ and a month of a programming... why not use this way too, combine it with other??
And what do you think about some sort of SEO toolbar that: - Will automate all your rank checking in the background while you work on other things. - Will compare the top five ranking pages on any particular search result with a page of your choice - Will give you the number of searches on Google, Yahoo and MSN for any particular keyword - Will give you an SEO analysis (similar to what WPG does) of the content of the top five rankings pages for any particular search term compared to a page of your choice Does it make a sense?..
The best way to increase both traffic and PR is by getting a good amount of backlinks to your site or blog. Not just backlinks from any website. It is always better to get backlinks from similar websites or blogs. That helps to increase SERP rankings and bring in a lot of traffic and ofcourse,it increases PR mainly.
