It's not the number of results that make a term competitive, it's the number of searches and / or competors gunning for that keyword. Try an allinanchor to see who you're up against.
And this is not all , if your website is really new, your domain age is less then 2 years for example , then yoiu could rank very bad even for a noncomptitive keyword, that only return 90,000 results!
Also, do a regular search and check out the current top 10. Are they highly authoritive sites that you have no chance against? Are the results mostly to domain roots or deep links? What is the average PR of the results? This should give u an idea of what it might take to reach top 10.
Is it better to see root domain or a deep link? Like how about when it shows the root + a deep link under the root listing? Whats better?
Seeing more deep links will mostly mean you'll have a better chance of ranking that term with your root. After all, it is going to be your main keyword for your root, compared to his sub page which may not be aggressively built with keyword links.
