    Hi there,
was just wondering...if you get a free site or a cheap site, off the peg etc as opposed to paying a web designer to creat one, or creating your own from scratch....how do you know its search engine friendly rating???

is is possible for your site to be 'big' and successful if it was not made specifically for you?

what sort of things do you look for or questions do you ask, specifically, to make sure your site is SE friendly?

    many thanks :)

I'm definitely not an SEO expert (just beginning there), but I stumbled upon this the other day, which might help you: http://www.se-inspector.com/

What google is looking for is good original content on static html pages, sites that are informative and content rich that have a lot of links to it. If you can't add content to your free site or it isn't on an original domain you will have problems ranking.

    I hope that helps

Correction. Static or Dynamic pages have no bearing. Technically, Wordpress blog posts are dynamic pages and they rank very well. Run through any search result and you will see that dynamic urls rank up there with static html pages.

Also, regardless of whether it is a free site or non-original domain (I am assuming you are talking about sub-domains here) has no bearing as well. As long as you can get inbound links to your content, you will rank well enough. I have seen lycos and tripod personal pages rank well every now and then.
