A reliable way to check # of backlinks - does it even exist?

I used to always use this tool called link harvester..yesterday I realized its results as compared to a yahoo linkdomain check were way off...then I tried using link harvester for msn..and msn has way different results for some things again...and so on and so on...

So..is there any way to really assess how competitive the market place is - I mean by seeing how many links the top sites really have BEFORE entering the market?

Or can you only use those results to compare your site to another site?

Tough call this question as the tools vary so much and the results differ from application to application
Marketleap has been around about 10 years or so
    http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/

Hope this helps a little :)

thx, I'll check this tool out...but what I'm really wondering is HOW far off yahoos results can be (yahoo is the most reliable for that ive heard..). Do they sometimes just show a small fraction of the links or only half of them or something or are they usually close to the real number of links?

    I Agree,

Marketleap's link pop checker rules, you want to be in the 900lb gorilla section!

By the way the link command in google's blogsearch seems to return accurate number of backlinks from blogs
