If you overuse a particular anchor text(keyword) too many times is it possible to be hit with a penalty for that word?

May be a dumb question but I'm still very new in this field. What is to prevent a competitor for that keyword/phrase from spamming that anchor text all over the web and then getting your site, as you said, penalized/banned?

Yes of curse, Instead of using particular anchor text(keyword) too many times try to vary the words in the anchor text, just vary the way they appear. For example, some people might be inclined to vary their target term ‘car insurance’ with ‘car insurances quotes’ or ‘get car insurance’ etc. However, this dilutes the anchor text focus and reduces the power of that link for improving your target term ranking. However if you instead used variations in upper and lower case such as:

    Car insurance
    Car Insurance
    car Insurance

You are already making the links look more “organic”, but still keeping the link focus. You can also use hyphens in the links as these are treated the same as spaces by search engines. For example, ‘car-insurance’ is treated the same (at least in the SERPS) as ‘car insurance’

If you actually rephrase you question, you'll get this.

"If you spam a particular anchor text(keyword) too many times is it possible to be hit with a penalty for that word?"

    Spamming - Google Hates it.

overuse of a particular anchor text(keyword) too many times cause for a search engine penalty. you have to promote your keyword in a organic way.
You can use key phrase, with combination of your target anchor text(keyword). Try to use keyword combination in place of just exact keyword. even it can cause penalty.

I don't think you will be penalized because if so then people would use this as a advantage to get there competitors penalized.

I think you should use less anchor tag in content of page expect menu. then you will not penalized at all.

    Yes, if when only:

The URL (homepage or deeppage), that has backlinks with only few (or even 1) anchor text, and the amount of links also big.
This except the site name or domain name.

    Example:

If you have ONLY anchor text link from 100 places to www.sample.com on anchor "insurance", bad
If you have ONLY anchor text link from 100 places to www.sample.com on anchor "sample" or "sample.com", good

    Just a question here....

If there is a site template and the creator of the template adds his/her site url to the bottom of the site template as a means of credit. Now if this site template is used by many people, which leads to similar backlinks, will it be treated as spam ?

PS : Just asking this as I do have a template generator that adds a url to my site in the templates.

No. Why would they be considered as spam then? They will be considered as mere backlinks.
