A Question for vBulletin Website Owners

    I am assuming this is the best category as I am asking about your expenses and a website is like a business I guess. I've looked around the forum and can't really find a more suitable category, so I apoligise if this is in the wrong category.

    I am basically wondering for research purposes how much vBulletin Website owners on DP pay for expenses and the resources what they require.

    I would like to know the following;

    • Per month, how much do you spend on hosting your forum (this includes if your vBulletin forum is part of a whole website)?
    • Do you own or do you lease your vBulletin license?
    • Are there any other expenses that you have to pay that is directly related to your vBulletin installation?
    • Did you find it easy to install your vBulletin forum, or did you have to get someone to install this for you?

    This is for research purposes and it is partly for a University project so if anyone could be kind to to lay your answers out so they are easy to log down this would be great.

    Also if you have explanations behind any of the answers you give, please expand.

    THANKS.

    - You don't have to pay any extra to host a forum so I guess a $5 godaddy package would do to host it. I'd also recommend 1and1, however their database storage space is limited to 100mb compared to godaddy's 200mb per database.
    - Owned license plan is better (although that has changed recently, no more leased plans), otherwise at the end of the licensing period you have to take the forum down unless you renew the license.
    - No, as a developer I handle all vbulletin related work myself, so no other expenses.
    - Takes minutes to install the default package.

    • around $250/m for a dedicated box
    • Owned (Recently Upgraded to vB 4.0)
    • I have paid modifications. Like, vBSEO, some custom modifications and a custom style.
    • It's pretty easy, even a novice can do it easily.

    * I pay $200 a month for a decicated server. On that server I run 3 vbulletin forums and 5 wordpress blogs.

    * Owned license

    * No extra expenses - except for paid modifications

    * I found it VERY easy to install VBulletin. It was a lot easier then any other forum software I have ever used.

    It looks like you pay a little bit more,
    can you let me know where do you host?
    VPS is quite enough is your forums are not getting too much traffic.

    Sometimes a single forum can be too much to be hosted on a standard dedicated server...

    I lease a dedicated server from Future Hosting

    My main forum is getting 3.6+ million page views a month, and around 150,000 unique IP addresses monthly. I moved away from a VPS a long time ago. It just could not keep up with the load. And I'am about to have to upgrade to the next level dedicated server.
