the starting salary for an IT engg. would be around $300 - $500....depending on which company he is working for.

My brother is an IT engg with 5 years of experience....he gets around $1400 per month.

but of course, an IT engg is not needed for such a job and so I guess a that should be a decent salary.

    Yes, it is.

Although it can be very little salary in Europe or US, even for a freelance worker, ir can be very nice for a student in some countries. Maybe for less hours it will be better.

Well, not exactly. That actually what would be a starting salary for an educated person in any field (except someone who's done an MBA, medical or legal studies - those get way up). I, having a masters degree and work experience, wouldn't expect to be paid that less.

Companies in India exploit the large pool of easy labour available thanks to the huge population. And so, most people are willing to work for cheap. Now that works out OK because food, services, eating out etc are cheap in India compared to the West (I know because I have lived in both places). But then electronics and other goods are at a parallel rate with those in the west. And so we Indians find buying a computer or a laptop or a mobile phone more expensive than it would be for someone in the West.

The other thing is that a major chunk of our population lives in poverty in rural areas. For them, 200USD a month is a dream salary.

I know a lot about SEO, and I have had PR3-PR6 websites.

If you payed me 500$ I would not take it.

But there are some people (with lesser knowledge of course) who will do this for around 300$ for sure.

It will be very difficult to find someone in Mumbai who would work full time for $200 a month.

Only exceptions will be single guys who are just out of college and aren't able to find a better job elsewhere.

If you want to hire cheap workers, you will have to look at people from tier II and tier III cities.

In bigger cities, it is not possible to give a decent life to a family for $200 a month....may be not even for $300 a month.

In fact, the lowest starting salary on a government employee is around $200.

    Source.

Skilled labor and cheap labor are no longer synonymous in India.

I don't think someone with a few years of experience in this field would work for anything less than $400-$500 a month.
