SEO is "Search Engine Optimization", corresponding to the process and science of structuring a page to make it friendly to search engines, as well as backlinking to build recognition. SEM is "Search Engine Marketing" Which speaks of making money via search engines holistically.

We can say SEO as a part of SEM. SEM involves PPC, CTC. SEO involves link building process.

Also, some would argue that SEM is part of SEO ;)

But yeah, generally SEO involves doing stuff to your own site and on other sites to increase your position for specific keywords on the 'natural' search results so that you get relevant traffic.

SEM generally involves buying contextual adverts on search engines, targeting specific keywords, so when a user searches for a specific keyword your advert is served so that you get relevant traffic.

But there is a lot of cross over. For example, you can run a google adwords campaign for a while to test different keywords and track which ones generate the most traffic and the most conversions (number of people who visit your site and actually buy something). Once you've identified the most valuable keywords (the ones that lead to the greatest number of conversions) via the adwords campaign, you can then start using other SEO techniques to optimise your site for those keywords in natural searches and drop the adwords campaign so that you can get the same traffic but without having to pay for the adverts. So you're using a bit of SEM to gather data to help your SEO.

SEM= "Paying a search engine or a directory to add a site to its database immediately depending on the keywords you want to target"

For SEM You decide what you want to spend, which words or phrases you want to purchase, and exactly which page you want your ad to link to.

SEO=" includes your organic search engine ranking, on page optimization, off page optimization, competitor analysis."

SEO mainly on the value of the website and the network (easy to reach your website from backlink) but SEM is aim on the traffic
