A question about CTR. Please Help!

Lets say I have a campaign with 4 ad groups in it. Three of the adgroups have fairly high CTR (~15%) and one ad group has a low CTR (~1%). Does having this low CTR adgroup in my campaign negatively affect my other adgroups in the same campaign?

Yes, This will affect other adgroups in the same campaign and gradually the campaign itself...

Why would it affect the other adgroups if its not directly related to them?

Isn't that the point of creating seperate adgroups?

I didn't think they did either. If it is a separate ad-group, it shouldn't have an affect. QS is based off the individual AG itself.

My thoughts is an emphatic NO.

All keywords performance will go towards how Google see your account and make up your account history, but there won't be any direct positive/negative between those adgroups.

What's more - it's the keywords/ads that makes up the Quality Score ... an Adgroup with X CTR doesn't really make sense, unless there is only 1 keyword in it (1 to 1) .. then it's the keyword we are talking about, not the adgroup.

The adgroup simply hold the keywords and ads and its how these ads/keywords perform that makes the account history up.

Quality Score for Google and the Search Network

While we continue to refine our Quality Score formulas for Google and the search network, the core components remain more or less the same:

    * The historical clickthrough rate (CTR) of the keyword and the matched ad on Google; note that CTR on the Google Network only ever impacts Quality Score on the Google Network—not on Google
    * Your account history, which is measured by the CTR of all the ads and keywords in your account
    * The historical CTR of the display URLs in the ad group
    * The quality of your landing page
    * The relevance of the keyword to the ads in its ad group
    * The relevance of the keyword and the matched ad to the search query
    * Your account's performance in the geographical region where the ad will be shown
    * Other relevance factors

So, the CTR of one adgroup not only effects the QS of keywords in all the adgroups in that campaign, it effects the QS of all keywords in your account as a whole.

However, I would suggest it is only a small factor in the overall equation and the lower CTR in one adgroup is more than compensated for by the high CTR in the other 3 adgroups. BUT,of course, it also depends on the number of words and impressions gained in each adgroup - what is your campaign and account CTR? If closer to 1 than 15 then the low CTR adgroup may be doing more harm than good
