A Problem User, What To Do?

    Hi,

I made a topic asking to a answer to a question. This was that i run a competition on my site. Refer 10 friends and you get your own domain + hosting.

However, one user has registered 10 times as himself. He thinks I’m pretty stupid because he speaks to me on MSN on how he can't wait.

    What shall I do?

    I have 3 choices:

Ban him temp, he won't get prize.
Warn him, he won't get prize.
Leave him, he won't get prize.

Im not sure but im leaning to warning him as i don't want him to think he can get away with it.

    Open for suggestions!

I would give him a verbal warning and chose someone else as winner. Unless hes been a problem before then you should give him teh ban.

If the contest isn't over yet, clarify the rules - anyone caught cheating will be immediately disqualified and risk being banned. You have the power, and if you can show leniency with this power, all the better.

I believe you dont have many members right now, thats why you are thinking of letting him go without a ban. There is a tradeoff : You might want to have the member and give away your forums repo or viceversa. Believe me, a member like him is no good at all , he will only cause more trouble.

I'd ban him, he's trying to cheat?! Or perhaps suspend him?

He's violated the rules and he's not entitled to the reward.

Handle it privately. Don't back down.

I spell out all of my promotions, their rules very clearly, and express the terms of disqualification.

    Best of luck.

I would temporary suspend his account if I were you. He would definitely not be getting the prize.

Were they a good forums citizen before the contest?

If they were a contributing member before the contest I'd simply disqualify them.

If they are a new member screwing around, ignore them.

I have 2500 members and have yet to ban anything except spam bots.

If you don't feed the trolls they will go away.

ban his IP in the .htaccess file. He'll get a "Forbidden" page - unless he uses a proxy.

    Agent_Smith (nice nickname BTW :)),

I'd warn and suspend him temporary. Banning may be too much.
If he understands, he will change his behaviour. If not, probably will find another place to have fun.

I'll tell you this. As a Forum Administrator you don't want to loose any member. I thought like this a few months back. Hopefully I changed my mind.
Sometimes it's better to drop 1 conflict-generating member, than struggle with him for the rest of your and forum members life.

Believe me, you and your members will be a lot happier because of that. It will be off your mind and members will appreciate your decision.
