A privately registered domain name is redirecting to my clients site.

Hi i'm the web developer for www.myclientssite.com our statistics logs show traffic coming from another domain name www.theotherdomainname.com. This domain name was privately register about a year from yahoo registrar before my clients site which was registered with godaddy, we did not consent this domain to set this re-direction nor we have any affiliation with www.theotherdomainname.com I called Yahoo Billing and Technical support for 2 hours only to be told that they cannot do anything about it.

Extra traffic is good but i need to know why and privately registering the domain throws up a red flag. Why would any one purchase a domain name privately redirect it at no cost? I think we are all old enough to know that in this world nothing is free, there is always a catch.

To suck up and take advantage of the PR rating of "yoursite". That is the only reason I can think of.

Thank you Colby for shedding light on this issue, do you have any advise on how to combat this problem?
Again i spoke to yahoo and they are sticking to their song, they can't do anything about it let alone give me any type of information about the owner.

nothing you can do really... people can redirect their websites pretty much any way they want as long as they aren't infringing on your rights... and i dont think that argument really holds water in this case. It could be some strange black hat seo technique to add bad links or something to penalize your search results but I don't really know much in that area.

These guys are probably scammers, trying to artificially inflate the pagerank of their domain. After selling the domain at a high price because of the higher pagerank (leeched from your clients site) they probably remove the link. At the next Google update the pagerank and the money of the buyer are gone. Hardly anything you can do about it.

You might take a look at the logs for yoursite. If there is a lot of traffic from a single IP number they might be using a meta refresh type of redirection. In that case you can ban that ip.

If it is a top level redirection I don't think there is anything you can do.
