are you playing a CD or streaming from WMP?

    CD can be scratched
WMP can face internet connection delay

What sound card are you using? Is it on board?

Have you check in your hardware properties whether the device is detect or not?

Try using system restore. Revert it back to date that you know its working.

Otherwise, you can reinstall the OS.

Reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling the OS should always be last resorts. Don't unless you run out of options.
