What is considered the best mode of opening links in a directory, Open in a new window or have it open in the existing window.

? i have some one say they prefer the same window where i have a new window, simple question and one i had not considered to be a real drama, your thoughts ?

New window. Keep your site/ads visible for as long as possible. They may come back later.

I vote new, because you want that user to consider browsing your site after browsing the new window.

    Take for instance this

A user clicks a link that opens in the same window,
Browses the new site 5 pages deep
Finds it an inconvenience to hit the back button 5 or 6 times and moves on.

Now, if it is a new window. The user can simply go to the old tab or taskbar to continue checking out your site.

It should always be new window, as you want your visitor to stay for the max time on your site.

I always say the same window - thats because every external link i click is usually done with the middle mouse button - so it opens a new tab in firefox without switching to it.

Although when i think about it, a new window keeps the customer on your site. I may try it:)
