a new social-networking website needs a marketing plane

Hello, I'm about to launch a new social network (not just another boring social network, something totally new), I'm very confused about the marketing stuff, should I contact an online marketing solution company (any suggestions)? or should I just replace some ad banners somewhere? or what about doing the marketing myself as long as the website has a new idea that could stand out itself? (how to do the marketing myself anyway :D)

I have a budget of $1k for marketing, any advice would be much appreciated.

Whatever you do keep in mind that you need to be different from the others especially from Facebook. You can attract new members only if you have something that is interesting to them. Its not an easy task nowadays to grab someones attention and keeping it, but you can test, test, test things and see what people like.

Also i suggest that you should go only after female audience at the start. Attract females (teenage girls, women, married women, singles etc.) Focus on attracting the females, make it interesting for them to hang on and after that all you need are few ads and BOOM the place will be flooded with men, and lots of new members. If you go after the males first, you'll have problem keeping them coming back since the place will be like ...... well you know how it will look like :)

i agree with the idea of mr.Borce.S getting business from any industry you have to follow the required rules of that industry. and for a social website to come up with emerging members it is the right way to follow the formula of ladies first. but once you invest your precious time in working o some project it becomes compultion to get the best marketing because without maketing it s difficult to sale any idea in this world.
so i think you should go for intenet maketing these terms are made to do some thing that is a professional out put

Elmasry, if you have confidence in yourself and your genius, I would recommend marketing yourself.

Think outside the box, allow your creativity to flow and don't be afraid to experiment. With a market, such as social networking, that is already dominated by one or two market leaders you need to theorise new or unused methods - for this particular market, that is - of reaching the potential users and attracting them to your service.

I'd recommend studying guerilla and viral marketing for inspiration. I believe that if an idea is good enough initial marketing should not be much of an obstacle.

"Build it and they will come"
