A new forum software script

Okay this may sound to some like I am trying to re-invent the wheel, but over the next year I am going to develop a new forum software. Something that combines the best bits from all the ones currently available. I hope it to be something along the lines of how vBulletin is, i.e. easy to use and lots of customizations and plugins, but what I want to know is:

Whats do you like about current forum software?

What would you like to see, that's not already implemented?

What could be improved in current forum software?

It will likely take me the best part of 2009 just to come up with a milestone version as I will be doing this in my spare time. But I want to bring vBulletin quality forum software to those who can only afford freeware. I would greatly value any opinions you may have.

It would be easy for you to get in contact with some more developers, so the process can be modular and easy for you.

More Ajax features more better. Try to use Extjs if you want to make somthing special :)

Use smf as base for your development.

I personally don't find vbulletin very user friendly. Anyone without any knowledge wont be able to set it up and customize it too well. I think making a web2.0 and very user friendly backend would be awesome for those who are new to installing such scripts.

On top of that I would really work on speed. There is nothing worse then a slow forum.

I agree totally, I want to combine speed and ease of use into this, but without sacrificing features and usability. I might even look to get more people on board with this project. It's about time there was a decent competitor to vBulletin.

Wt i want is a forum who does not eat server and browser resources...
I remember wan i installed VBulletin, page was loading like 20-30 secs, and that's not because of bad server or internet connection, other forum like PHPBB was loading fine.

Really? There are a few things about vBulletin that I find annoying, but I have always found that its speed is quite fast.
