I was wondering if a site that was somewhat successful didn't renew their domain registration and the lost it... then i regged it and made it a site. could i be called a squatter and have to give up the name?

If they do not renew domain name and you buy it you own it period. Squatters in my opinion register people or companies names before they do waiting for them to ask to buy it for alot of money.

Yep, just as rcj662 stated, a squatter is someone who registers a name that you may want before you do, and ask for a ton of money for it if you still want it. If it's expired, and they don't get it, it's fully yours, and they can't do nothing about it

Not 100% true, even if they dont re-register it you could still have issues if they own the trademark or can claim you are passing off. If it isnt trademarked and you take the domain and create a site totally different to their operations - eg if they are a UK hardware site which isnt trademarked and you make a USA sexual health site then they will have no grounds for complaint
