A Lesson In Why External Backups Matter

AVSim, a huge flight simulator site, was hacked recently and had its servers wiped.
Like me, many people thought, "No worries, they must have backups, they will be back soon".
Well, yes and no! Apparently, the backups were stored on the SAME servers!

Ten years of work and a massive file library all gone. What a tragic mistake!

There was a large hosting forum webhostingtalk.com that was hacked recently with no backups off site fresher than six months old. Same lesson learned.

I am strongly recommend backups on different servers to save your time and money. You should ask your hosting provider before singing up.

You can set backups to be sent to you on certain servers

Six months! Forget hackers, I wouldn't even trust my hard drives for that long.

Anyone know any websites that track these backup disasters? I feel like some schadenfreude! :D

I started backing up my website files and database nearly six months ago.

Now, a backup script run every 3 hours and send all files to my email. Stop worrying about data lost :)

If you have a server with hyperVM you can do a daily backup automatically. I like to set it up so that it's off-site to increase the chances that the backups will remain in tact. On-site means both your servers could catch on fire, yes, that is possible and I've known someone who it happened to.

Moral: Always use offsite backups in good locations.
