I've never used Joomla or Drupal but they are very popular CMS's and I imagine tsetting the title is very straightforward.

It can be done with wordpress very easily.

    Sure does.

I've just started a new site which is getting some SE traffic already - it uses wordpress but I have yet to optimize the meta <title> tag. I'll be doing that very soon and expect it will boost rankings significantly - just from that small ten minute tweak.

I've been teaching this technique (among so many others) to a private group - obviously nothing ground breaking in this little technique but it seems that for a lot of people it really does need drilling into their head.

I've found the same with freelance writers - you really have to keep pushing them to do these keyword focused titles.

So I'm giving this thread a bump because it really deserves it.

I would probably say it is single-handedly the most important SEO technique you can do and can literally explode your traffic. So it is a must that people put this into action.

What you've got here is two conflicting techniques. Your technique of keyword stuffing the title will usually result in better search engine results. However, for social media marketing, the title that you gave as an example of a bad title would actually attract more people. "Repair Cambridge Audio Amplifier Amplifier - Fix Broken Amp With No Sound" might get great results in the search engines, but it sounds very spammy and would probably get a far lower ctr from the SERPs than "The easiest way to mend a broken amplifier in just 37 minutes" in the same position. That said, the keyword-stuffed title has the better chance of getting in that prime position. So it really depends on where you expect to get your traffic.

I like this post, but I guess a lot of it depends on how many competitors you have in the industry that determines how many visitors you get. Like my title for instance is stuffed with keywords (I think) but all of them are hard to rank for because of the "make money" industry, but I will check out my other articles and stuff too.

It is not keyword stuffing as keyword stuffing is repeating the same keyword in a title and within a page - it is simply using as many descriptive keywords that will help a reader coming from the search engines and also help the SEs understand your page - this is a practice condoned and encouraged by Google.

When the keywords are reflected in the title they become bold which increases CTR so having keywords in the title will actually help your CTR.

There is a conflict of interest like you say but it is not a problem at all.

Firstly 95% of posts are not suitable for viral or social media marketing. Fixing a cambridge audio Amp is not something you will market socially - your traffic will come from the Search Engines - hence the need for optimizing the title to maximize chances of SE traffic.

Secondly if you were marketing socially then you could change the title or do a title which is a compromize between being catchy and being SEO'd. But also you can use a completely different title when submitting to a site like Digg so it does not really matter that much what your actual title is.

Also you could use the catchy title for a week during the social and viral spike - and then change it after that to the SEO'd version.
