A LARGE WEBSITE IS USING MY CONTENT

Discussion in 'Legal Issues' started by R&B, Nov 12, 2013.

The largest IRANIAN news website is copy and pasting my web content onto theirs. They don't even bother to misplace or change some words. it is the exact same thing.
My question is since they are based out of Iran and my emails and personal takedown notices doesn't seem to have an effect on them, is there anything i can do? of course without getting myself in trouble (Iran and stuff).

    thank you all

First things First -> Ask Obama and Nuke Em,

Secondly you cannot do much as they based on different country. If this is really urgent you can ask registry | host to take action. Even if this not work, you can contact your country's embassy to look into this matter, but i don't think they will take that much pain.

So use a JavaScript copy and paste solution to include a backlink to your site (e.g. "The original article can be found at http://example.com/whatever/news-story.html"). Also embed some links back to your site within the story.

You could try monitoring traffic and guessing which IPs are theirs and blocking the range, but you might be blocking some legitimate visitors. So it might be best to take advantage of their stupidity to get links back to you.

    thanks for your responses,
I always include links in my text but they figured out that part, so they take the links out before posting.
We are based in US so there's no us embassy in Iran. I know their domain registrar but no indication of the server. Can google be any help? blocking their site from google index?

You can send DMCA to Google for them to remove the pages from their search results. If they are not correcting spelling, you could use the JavaScript to inject something in one of the paragraphs (such as "this content is stolen") when they copy it. As you are based in the USA, blocking IPs seems quite a viable option. You could try using raw logs or a log file analyser to help determine which ones are from Iran.

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/repostus/

I saw that on techdirt the other day. Pretty sound stuff to expand on Ryans suggestions.

I am also a huge fan of sending stuff up the pipe with a really offensive image ;) Something blasphemous about the ayatollah should do the trick. They will stop scraping your stuff post haste.

    Thanks guys,
I think google would be my best option. I've never done that before but I think I should try. Will google block their page from google all together or just on the search result?

If someone is doing this by hand it becomes a bit more problematic. If they are simply scraping stuff you can block their site IP entirely with htacces.

Are you using wordpress by chance? You should probably drop a link to the site(s) as well.

Well, the specific page won't be shown in search results. There will be a note on the search results page that something has been removed.

as @ryan_uk said. Use tynt scripts in your site. So when they close their eyes and do the copy paste, your site links get in their posts :D

File dmca complaints as well ;) sometimes, you need to be harsh on some peoples :p

Does that have to be done manually (Javascript copy and paste), or is there a WP plugin?

I have said it, use tynt script

you can google tynt and get the script. A free sign up is needed on their website and they almost add all copy paste with a signature and send u mails of the keywords of ur site.

With the relative locations of both yourself and the host of the website in question, you probably couldn't be in a much worse situation with the lack of options available to you to deal with this. Aside from contacting their domain registrar who may offer assistance, I can't see what you can do to stop or takedown the offending content without massive cost to yourself.

I'll add another vote for going the "higher up the chain" route: contact their ISP and complain, contact Google, contact their advertising choices. If they're running AdSense, Google will ban their account. If they're running other ads, most networks will blacklist them. Their ISP can even go shut them down if copyright theft is against their TOS. Bear in mind that the more annoying you are, the less valuable your content becomes to them: cause enough trouble and they will go away.

On top of that, the IP banning route is neat. A quick change to your htaccess can shut their specific IP out or you can use a country ban if you want to (this resource is neat: http://incredibill.me/htaccess-block-country-ips).

That Repost Everywhere thing looks neat, too. :)

This is a most unfortunate situation. Hopefully you can win this case somehow. I hope there is some sort of globol copyright law that an help you.

You may start constructing "Disclaimer" which you can prevent visitors to copy/duplicate your contents.

    Your funny....
These guys are in Iran right?
Whoever their host is probably does not give a crap...
and if they did go away, it would be to another host that cares even less....
You guys are assuming they are using an upscale hosts that follows all regs...
if they are doing what you say they are doing, then I bet they are not....
and very unlikely they will go away as long as you are providing them free content.

I suggest you to place a your sites name in post in several place and also on post pic this will make difficult to copy/paste and then he might leave copy/paste from your site..
