If you want to learn web designing, you can start with a note pad. I feel it is the best way to start learning where you don't have any help on auto completion and indentation. By this way you can learn basics very well. Once you gain some experience, you can buy Dreamweaver which I feel the best professional web design software.

But, if you just plan to start a website, then my recommended way is to do it with Wordpress CMS. Then you can find freely available templates and customize it. Once you profit from the website, you can go for a unique theme.

    Hope this helps! :)

Any way to get a *cheap* full version of Dreamweaver CS5? Or maybe CS3 or CS4?

I'm using an ooooooooold Dreamweaver 4 (basically for landing pages) and it's a 10 years old software! :)

i never try it but i guess artisteer cannot do that. So far i know, artisteer could only open its own file project type.

Pagebreeze HTML Editor is a good one if you want to do simple websites. Just do a Google search for PageBreeze and you should get a download page for it. Available in FREE and Pro versions.

I think Dreamweaver is not that usefull. I use Photoshop and Webocton Scribtly where you get a better and cleaner code.

You have already mentioned best designing software which is Dreamweaver. If you want to make it more professional then take help of photoshop. If you want to design it fast then take any ready made web template and edit it with Dreamweaver; you can find lot of them on google.

for website design you need, photoshop, Dreamweaver, fireworks, for the coding and graphics. though, you can download some free photo editing programs like gimp, paint.net, and you can do coding on Notepad.
