What they are talking about is something like this: http://www.tech-weblog.biz/visitorstats.php . Specifically the referrals column.
try this search http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=webanalyse+sex and you will find plenty of people who "publish" their logs. The referrers are hyperlinks, so Google will treat that as an outbound link and raise the PR of the other site. Not hard to code, either. oh, and my 2c http://sarahk.pcpropertymanager.com/blogspam.php Sarah
Sarahk, after I looked at your website, I will never talk back to you again (Shawn is not included in that statement), did you develop the Real Estate Software? Thank you for trying to help us old men understand (Compar and I)
Locke, Cemper is cool as hell and has linked to some of my pages in the past. Now are you telling me he is publishing his referral pages? That is what it looks like to me? SK mentions there is some benefit to doing this. So both of you explain what the hell this has to do with a forum that has a thread that crawls websites? Shawn, where in the hell are you when we need you?
I think you'll find it all started from someone wondering why they had a referrer who wasn't linking to the site. It's a promotional method which is used extensively and by sites ranging from bars to furniture to the expected adult sites. Sarah PS: I wrote v1 of PCPM, all of Botspotter and focus these days on webdevelopment.
SK, since you are doing Web Development now, can you provide the forum with a link to your Web Development website in case anyone is interested?
Hi Anthony It's in the me! bit of my sig but I don't have a huge number of spare hours so not actively contract hunting right now. Sarah
Ummmmmm ... there actually was a great example of this on my referrer log spamming page that you may have missed when you looked at it - try clicking on the Google link between "Kinda slimey, eh" and "Pretty slimey, eh" - 267 occurances! ;-) alek
There isn't one. it's laziness. They want the stats but don't know how to protect them. Interestingly I've been helping a local organisation get a content management system and when ever we talked about admin functions (beyond the actual publishing of pages) which would maintain some of the databases vital to the organisation the web companies started talking desktop. It was as if there was no such thing as private pages. really bizarre. Sarah
SK, you know I always agree with you now But the link below is from a tech smart man, he publishes a website for web developers, this was already given in this thread, Cemper seems like a pretty bright guy, why do you think he is publishing the following. http://www.tech-weblog.biz/visitorstats.php
Nobody ever said he was dumb... He uses Movable Type which is a CMS system of some repute. Perhaps the logs are part of that and he just hasn't thought to turn them off. Perhaps he's not fussed if you try to play games using his site. Maybe it's to help promote him to advertisers. Maybe we should ask him why he wants this page visible?! Sarah
SK, if the guy is like me he would be a push over for your reasoning Maybe you should send him the link to this thread and give him some advice on the matter. I am sure he would be a great member here and a very good contact for the membership.
Talk about open source, Cemper is open stats, he must have his reasons. I seen the search engine stats that you point out in your attachment. SK, no one is really going to get anything past you now are they
I sent him a note with a pointer to my page on referrer log spamming - my guess is, like most people, he has been on the "Net" for a while when it was a friendlier place, and stuff like this is kinda useful - unfortunately, the "bad guys" of the world now are using it to advance their own interests.
Did you invite him to Digital Point Alek? He has a great following worldwide so send him the URL to this thread if you would, that guy would be a great addition to DP.
