From my experience, SMF has been the easiest for bridging with Joomla. Integrates well through extensions that you can find on the official SMF site for available for free download.

Wish vBulletin were as easy to integrate though.

I just need a good free forum software , I've heard about MyBB and I've installed it on my local server and it looks like VB.
Plugins and modules are what counts

It has RSS built into it. As far as adsense, you would just use a component for the Joomla install/template itself

If you plan it to be a huge forum, go for the subdomain.
If it's going to be part of the main website and serve a parent website rather than be a standalone forum, then install under the /forums directory.

SMF is free, yes. And it has quite a lot of mods/plugins available. Can't compare with MyBB, sorry. Not too familiar with that one.

Phil, I understand that you may not be too familer with the forum softwares here in respect to Joomla. Joomlaboard is integrated natively into Joomla, ie your users can use it without having a bridge software or hack and can interact with other Joomla Modules (to an extent). It however lacks many features which a fully fledged forum software would have and which it appears you are after.

MyBB is a good forum software with mods etc and people are ranting about how it vb like and for free etc. Thing here is that while all that may be fine, are you willing to have your users have to log in twice? IE, login to your Joomla and then if to use the forum, have to create a new account in it and log into it separatley? To the best of my knowledge, there is no bridge between Joomla and MyBB which allows the sharing of users.

SMF is an established forum software and has a much larger community than MyBB not to mention the quality/functionality of its mods. There are currently 2 methods you can integrate SMF into Joomla for that single user logon experience and seamless integration into your Joomla Template. One is to use the official bridge from SMF. Another is a hack version which is getting quite populour as it allows you to use Community Builder logon and have that Myspace type thing going while having the power of SMF as a forum.

    Hope that helps a bit.
