I don't agree with this - I think it is best to match up the colors with your site's colors. For example - if the links on your site are red, then your Adsense links should be red. Same thing goes for the background. In my experience, the better your Adsense blends in with the rest of your content, the more clicks you will receive.
In terms of link colors, blending with the site is important. If the link colors are red as Gery1717 points out, then the adsense links should be red. All things being equal however, it seems that the traditional blue hyperlinks get more clicks (assuming they are well blended), because this is what the average person is accustomed to seeing as a hyperlink.
I have tried different combination and track the performance. The ones that I intentionally made the ad background blue in contrast to the page white background actually performed better than the ones blended in with the site!
The long banner works well for me. I get around $5-$7 per day from adsense. There are some clicks for my 150 * 150 link ads too. Test and test!!!
