A few really good links or many less quality links?

    Hi,

I spent a few hundred dollars on link building, directory submissions etc for a site, about $300 in total.

I could have used that money to purchase a few permanent links, including one permanent pr7 link for $300.

So my question to you is, what is better? A few really good links or many less quality links, directory submission etc?

    Thanks in advance!

The top directories will do you the best. If your site doesn't rank then the directory may with the link into your site.
    This is my order.

    1. Top Directories
    2. Permanent links
    3. Less Quality links

Can't go wrong with directories, they wont shut down if they are high quality. Permanent links are sketchy sometimes, and the lower quality links may not be worth much, or may also shut down.

I am always suspicious of permanent links. For example, how do you define permanent? Yes, that means "forever" but in the internet world anything longer than one year would apply. What happens when the site is sold? Would you be okay if that link disappeared two or three years out?

Link baiting is the best way to build links and that comes free. I don't buy links unless for one year or less.

Thanks for the quick responses. So the general concensus is to buy less links that are higher quality, particularly top directories?

I would rather focusing on good content, so the site would sell itself. Maybe you should spend those $300 in improving your content? Then you could tip of some bloggers, related sites etc, and they might write a review or something about you. That would give your highers SERP and probally alot more traffic than any directory (who uses directories anyways?).

    Content is king.

I completely agree that content is king, but how do you get round the problem of the site not containing any content?

The site will be a search script that grabs data from numerous sources and displays them to the user. - there is no content.

Do I get articles written relating to the industry the site is in and put them on the site somewhere?

Top quality with high PR is good if you got enough budget. if no or low budget it would not be so bad to go for free directories though.
