I'm a marketing major at a SUNY school, and we were assigned a professional in our field to get in touch with and ask some questions, however I've been having a lot of trouble getting them to respond and the project is due Friday. I was really looking forward to learning more about someone's personal experience, and I hope these questions will be fun for anyone willing to help me out 1. How/why did you decide to pursue the career in which you are working? 2. What was your undergraduate major? How did it help prepare you for your career? What additional training/education have you had? 3. Where can someone in an entry-level position expect to be in two years? five years? ten years? 4. What is the employment outlook in your field? Describe new developments? 5. What parts of your job do you find most challenging? Despite these challenges, what motivates you to remain? 6. What do you find most enjoyable? 7. Which seasons of the year are toughest in your job? 8. How do you spend a typical workday - yesterday for example? How much time do you spend with people? data? things? 9. Is this field growing enough that there's room for someone like me? 10. What educational preparation would you recommend for someone who wants to advance in this field? 11. What abilities are important for success and enjoyment in your field?
Hi there, I'll do my best to answer your questions and maybe this will help you to get through your project. 1. How/why did you decide to pursue the career in which you are working? I enjoy being competitive and to me marketing is a competitive career where I can help my customers to rise above the competition and get noticed. Most of my marketing is SEO/SEM so I can't speak to other forms of marketing very well. 2. What was your undergraduate major? How did it help prepare you for your career? What additional training/education have you had? My undergraduate major was actually not in marketing, but in Emergency Medicine with a Bachelors of Science Degree. I have also trained for billing and I am an inbound marketing certified professional as well. My degree heavily emphasized math and science, preparing me for the business world. The billing courses prepared me for a variety of business aspects including basic business finance and some small portions of business law that I need to know on a day to day basis. The Inbound marketing course helped me to better serve my clients and understand how customers interact with the websites that they visit. Before pursuing my Bachelors degree I graduated with an Associate of Arts which focused heavily on writing and literature which prepared me for the content creation portion of my job. 3. Where can someone in an entry-level position expect to be in two years? five years? ten years? It is to early in my marketing journey for me to answer this. 4. What is the employment outlook in your field? Describe new developments? Conten marketing and search engine marketing are a growing field and it is likely to continue growing rapidly as we march on through this decade. Social media marketing is the hot item right now due to the trend in emerging apps and social media networking. Mobile friendly marketing and development is also a trend at the moment. As more and more users begin getting the majority of their content from mobile devices I would expect an even heavier emphasis to be put on this area in the coming years. 5. What parts of your job do you find most challenging? Despite these challenges, what motivates you to remain? Algorithms are straightforward, people are a bit more ambiguous. Making the customer comfortable at all times while delivering content/services to their exact specifications can be a bit more challenging in some cases. However I enjoy a challenge and these projects make me strive even harder for excellence. I like going to sleep at night knowing that I have helped a customer to find exactly what they need for success. 6. What do you find most enjoyable? I love creating content and writing so as a content marketing professional writing is the best part of my job. I also enjoy seeing the SEO scores improve as I help my clients to improve their sites. 7. Which seasons of the year are toughest in your job? The time between late October to early January seems slow for me as a freelance marketer working with small B2B clients. At this point people start gearing down for holiday breaks and business slows down. 8. How do you spend a typical workday - yesterday for example? How much time do you spend with people? data? things? I spend very little time with people outside of email or Skype. I spend a lot of time with data as well while analyzing sites and making changes as needed. I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say things, but if you let me know I'll try to answer that portion as well. 9. Is this field growing enough that there's room for someone like me? Yes, there is always room because there are new companies popping up everyday. You just have to put yourself out there and let people know you are there. 10. What educational preparation would you recommend for someone who wants to advance in this field? This may be answered better by someone else, I don't think I have adequate information for this. 11. What abilities are important for success and enjoyment in your field? Marketing requires hard work and dedication like anything else. It also requires good people skills, a working knowledge of good business practices, strong logic skills, and the ability to embrace change. You'll also need patience as well when things go wrong or when you encounter difficult clients sometimes. You'll also need to be willing to learn as marketing is constantly changing, especially in the world of SEO/SEM. I hope this will help you to complete your project. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
