A few questions about web directories for the pros here.

Hello web experts. I have a few questions about web directories. I have submitted my site to about 10 or so different free web directories and have a few questions about some of them.

    1. What are the 'deep' links that the directories usually charge you for?
    2. Will my website gain any kind of bonuses from the web directory if I do the reciprocal links instead of the regular links?
    3. Is it really worth my time to submit to these directories? My website has very user specific content, and requires a high level of computer knowledge to use. I only get about 15-25 uniques a day now (for about a month now) and I'm trying to raise that number.

    Thanks for the help,

    1. What are the 'deep' links that the directories usually charge you for?

Answer: You are paying for a review. Adding additional URLs to review takes the directory editors more time. Deep links are simply sub-pages of your site, that have unique/specific content.

    2. Will my website gain any kind of bonuses from the web directory if I do the reciprocal links instead of the regular links?

Answer: Yes, you might get penalized by the search engines for using a link scheme. Everyone knows that "swapping links" on a large scale is a big no no. Now you know too. Forget reciprocal links. These days any directory that allows that as a submission option is just asking for trouble.

    3. Is it really worth my time to submit to these directories? My website has very user specific content, and requires a high level of computer knowledge to use. I only get about 15-25 uniques a day now (for about a month now) and I'm trying to raise that number.

Answer: The better directories can send you traffic. Those that don't still can help improve your link popularity, which means your search engine ranks will improve - especially if using the correct (non spammy) link title.

In the end it comes down to quality. If you take the time to write quality descriptions and link titles, then your site will see a benefit. Especially on directories which offer lifetime listings for a reasonable price, you can't go wrong if those directories are still around 5, 10, etc., years from now.

Sounds good. I was honest and described my site well for the directory listings. I'm hoping to see at least some increase in traffic in about a week. I guess I'll have to work on some more content as well. Thanks for your time and great answers.

    Sorry for my ignorancy...

I've been in your directories site for about half an hour, and all you have there is just reciprocal link directories, and here you say they are a bad thing...

    I don't get it...

Sounds like you submitted to free directories so you may be waiting longer than a week. Also with only submitting to ten free directories - here is about what you can expect out of ten free directory submissions.

Maybe three will actually accept you at some point (maybe months in the future) - of those three two will either no longer be online or no longer maintained in a year. A couple will not approve your listing and the remaining five will never even bother to review it.

If you are looking for directory listings which might actually help your website look to the ones which charge reasonable review fees. You will get timely responses to your submissions and a controlled directory environment that in most cases keeps spam out of the directory index.

In which case I'll have to look into some paid directory listings. I didn't know that directories took that long to review. I'll have too look for a happy medium of paid and unpaid listings. I can't really afford to send hundreds of dollars. But I guess you have to spend money to make money.

Excellent sum up of where most free directories wind up. Feel free to submit to mine as I will review the submissions with in 48 hours. Only thing I really find is submissions in wrong category, and lack of quality of the sites being submitted.

    Good luck to you.

DSTSindustries - Thanks for the input. I went ahead and submitted to both of the web directories in your sig. I have no clue which, or if both are yours.

swedal - I'm looking into buying a few links in high PR web directories. Thanks again for the advice.
