A few questions about older sites

So, something we all agree on is that the older the site the better, in terms of SEO. Obviously we don't all have 5+ year old sites, and some people look to buy old sites to help in SEO.

I was wondering though how you actually benefit. Say I have a 6 month old site and buy a 5 year old site on a similar theme. Do I redirect the older url to the newer one? Does that give the new site all the benefits of the older site?

Also, if buying n older site to help a newer site does it have to be a really related site to see any benefits? Do they have to rank well for the same phrases you are targetting?

I ask, because I am about to build a new site but was comtemplating buying an older one as well to help it but I wouldn't know how to get best results from it.

    Any advice appreciated.

I don't think a redirect from an old site to a new site would unsandbox it, but I haven't tested it either. I would just make a seperate site out of the old domain.
