A Domain name which I want seems to be expired on 5/11 according to the whois information but it still says it's taken. Is it worth backordering for 18$?

I need some adivces before I do anything stupid. thanks guys.

grace period. even if you backorder it, another registrar can claim it and you're out $18. depending when it drops and who picks it up first.

At this point, pool.com is a good place to backorder it.

    Yikes, bad advice.
    1) The GoDaddy $18 backorder mentioned above ( I assume ) does not just "disappear" if you don't get the domain you want, you still keep the credit and can backorder something else.
    2) pool.com , snapnames.com , enom.com , namewinner.com , tdnam.com , all are "dropcatchers" where your expiring name could end up depending on who it is currently registered with, OR it could end up with any number of "domain tasters" who register a domain to check for traffic. Bottom line, if the name is decent, at all, you're going to have competition to get it, so more info would be needed in order to give you the best chance of getting it.

I managed to get 1stgirl.com, SEOgeek.com, etc. by backordering with Enom.com but a bit expensive - about USD45 each.

Right... pool.com is $60 also. It's the industry standard for "real" backorders, enom being the cheaper end at $30 , $45 .

pool.com and snapnames.com are both great, it just depends on what the name is and where it was registered.
